Equilibruim: Net Zero Projects

Equilibrium is a demonstration initiative that aims to build net zero homes across Canada, meaning each home is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes through heat, light, and power.  Ryan Scott and Chris Mattock will discuss the equilibrium projects they're involved with and how they hope to achieve net zero energy.

Ryan Scott, CEO, Avalon Master Builder
As Chief Executive Officer of Avalon Master Builder of Calgary, Ryan is a pioneer in ecosmart building. Chosen by CMHC to design and build an EQuilibrium™ demonstration home, his company’s mission is to build 100% of Avalon homes as Net-Zero energy homes by 2015 at no additional cost to the consumer, while creating homes people love to live in. Ryan is also the Chair of the Professional Homebuilders Institute of Alberta and Alberta’s representative on the National Education and Training Advisory Committee of the Canadian Home Builders Association.

Chris Mattock, Principal, Habitat Design + Consulting
As the Director of International Eco-House Inc. and owner of Habitat Design, Chris has been involved in the design and construction of numerous green and energy efficient residential and small commercial buildings as well as working on planning projects that incorporate sustainable community design principles. Chris has published several books on the topics of energy efficient and “healthy buildings” as well as co-authoring the national R-2000 training manuals. Chris has taught over 400 training seminars on green building design, building science topics, healthy buildings, energy efficient construction and sustainable community design as well as various courses at the U.B.C.
